‘singing walls and dancing robots’: the future of classical music?

Tod Machover is the composer and the brain of ‘ Death and the Power’, the opera of the future, produced by the medialab of MIT.

Last week we spoke to Adam Boulanger, who is in the group of Tod Machover: The opera of the future. This group is about how musical composition, performance, and instrumentation can lead to innovative forms of expression, learning, and health.

One of their projects is the opera ‘Death and the Power’.’It is a one-act, full evening work that tells the story of Simon Powers, a successful and powerful businessman and inventor, who wants to go beyond the bounds of humanity. Reaching the end of his life, Powers faces the question of his legacy: “When I die, what remains? What will I leave behind? What can I control? What can I perpetuate?” He is now conducting the last experiment of his life, passing from one form of existence to another in an effort to project himself into the future.’

Adam told us about how they worked for years on this project. Many students were involved. Not only PhD candidates, but also students in their first year. Actually students of about 18 year old, developed the software of the robot.

It is amazing how technology and arts come together in this project. Machover won the World Technology Award 2010 in the field of art.  It is a prize of the World Technology Network given to those who are in their opinion ‘doing the innovative work of “the greatest likely long-term significance” in their fields. They are those creating the 21st century.’

It crosses my mind: might this new performance  of music and technology be the future of classical music?

Verwondering en nieuwsgierigheid

Rijdend en glijdend toog ik vorige week woensdag naar het Luxtheater in Nijmegen om naar de premiere te gaan van onze eigen coproductie ‘Machina Ludens’ . Een videokunstwerk voortkomend uit verwondering en nieuwsgierigheid zoals Roy van Dalm de kenmerken van onze faculteit zo goed verwoord. Het is denk ik bijna een jaar geleden dat Roy, Ellen Kocken en Elisabeth van Overloop van  Dziga bij mij introduceerde. Of we mee wilden werken aan het maken van een  videokunstwerk voor urban screens in het kader van het project Art of Matching  . Een groep van docenten van verschillende instituten van onze faculteit(Wilfrid, Patricia, Jetske, Roy en Pim) heeft zich vervolgens gebogen over het concept en de videokunstenaar gekozen aan de hand van de door Dziga gemaakte selectie. 

 Dat werd Studio Smack.   En vorige week vond dus de premiere plaats van het kunstwerk: Machina Ludens. Tijdens de voorbereiding had de groep docenten gekeken naar wat echt kenmerkend is voor de faculteit techniek. Daarbij kwamen verwondering, nieuwsgierigheid en passie als kernwaarden naar voren. En ook ‘Meten is Weten’. Vervolgens opperde Jetske of Patricia (daar wil ik vanaf zijn) dat het wel interessant zou zijn als je verwondering kon meten. Vervolgens is daar het idee uit gekomen van de verwonderingsmeter: de Machina Ludens. Met een camera worden mensen gespot die kijken naar het urban screen. Door te bewegen kunnwn ze een sterretje verdienen, en daar ontstaat een spel uit: gewoon spontaan op straat. Al ondervindend. Maar je moet je natuurlijk wel eerst verwonderen en nieuwsgierig zijn. Het moet nog verder doorontwikkeld worden. Dat moet natuurlijk samen met studenten gebeuren. En dan nog eens kijken of we een mooi LCD scherm gesponsord kunnen krijgen om het ook op onze campus te gebruiken. Roy van Dalm, hoofddocent creatieve steden bij onze faculteit techniek, en lid van de kenniskring ARCCI, was de keynootspreker bij deze premiere. Hij hield een inspirerend verhaal en had daarbij een prachtige powerpoint over Creativiteit en Innovatie. Die moet ik nog te pakken zien te krijgen. Naast de premiere van Machina Ludens vond ook de premiere plaats van Sensibel, een coproductie van Michiel van Bakel en Royal Haskoning. Een korte film die geselecteerd is voor het internationaal filmfestival in Rotterdam. Al bij al een bijzonder geslaagde avond. Glijdend en glibberend kwam ik  tegen middernacht weer thuis.  Homo Ludens.
